Speaking with journalists at the CCT, Senators Rafiu Ibrahim and Samuel Anyanwu described the trial as an attempt by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to blacklist its leader before Nigerian.

The lawmakers noted that irrespective of the outcome of the trial, Saraki would be subject to other statutory procedures before being impeached as the Senate President.

“No more, no less. A dispassionate analysis of the proceeding of the CCT yesterday has pointed to the fact that the APC-led executive is still embittered against Dr Saraki over the manner of his election as senate president.”

“For those calling for the impeachment of the senate president, we urge them to avail themselves of the provisions of the law relating to such a sensitive step.

“They will have to produce as many as 100 senators to achieve that aim. As long as they don’t have the majority, the call is a tall dream that will remain a figment of the imagination of the groups and their sponsors,” Ibrahim said. Saraki’s case, however, became more complicated after the revelation from the Panama Papers investigation documents that leaked from law firm Mossack Fonseca, which specialises in creating offshore shell companies.

Similarly, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has hinted on plans to arrest Nigerians named in the Panama Paper leaks with secret offshore companies.

Meanwhile, Senator Peter Nwaboshi representing Delta North senatorial district has said that a member of the Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party will emerge as the next Senate president if Senator Bukola Saraki loses out at the code of conduct tribunal.
