NEWS: Boko Haram: Nigeria seeks UN support

– The chief of defence staff has called on the UN Peace Keeping body to assist in the fight against insurgency in Nigeria.

 – The CDS made this call during the deputy military adviser of the UN Peace Keeping, Gabriel Foster’s visit

 – Foster promised to make recommendations to the UN on insurgency in Nigeria

The chief of defence staff, Gabriel Olonisakin has called for the collaboration of the United Nation in the fight against insurgency in Nigeria and its neighbouring countries.

 In a meeting with the deputy military adviser of the UN Peace Keeping, Adrian Foster in Abuja on Monday, February 22, the CDS said the challenge of insurgency in Nigeria is a regional threat that deserves the UN active collaboration and support.

 Olonisakin said the attention of the UN body will help end the insurgency quick. Stating Nigeria’s commitment to global peace keeping, Olonisakin said Nigerian troops before independence have presently been on UN missions despite its security challenges.

 He added that some troops are presently on UN missions in Guinea Bissau, Mali, Dafur, Liberia and many other countries across the globe.

 For this, the CDS said Nigeria deserved more support and recognition from the world body.


While soliciting for quality and reputable representations in the area of UN positions and appointments by Nigerians, Olonisakin promised that Nigeria would continue to be a key player in world’s politics and diplomacy as well as maintenance of peace and security.

Speaking, Foster, a major general said he visited Nigeria to thank the armed forces for its contributions towards the world peace through its active participation in the UN peace keeping operations around the world.

 He said he also visited to access Nigeria’s current situation in its fight against insurgents in a bid to make recommendations to the UN to rally support for the country to overcome its multiple security challenges for the overall benefit of the mankind.

 Since 2009, Nigeria has suffered several attacks by the Boko Haram terrorists group operating in the Northeastern region.

 These attacks has led to the death of thousands and displacement of many others in the region.
