Senators on Tuesday, February 16 lashed out on Senator Kabir Marafa representing Zamfara central senatorial district over interview with Punch newspaper. This was raised as a point of order by Senator Isa Hamman Misau representing Bauchi central senatorial district.

While speaking on the issue, he expressed his anger and disappointment in the senator saying that no lawmaker should be allowed to tarnish the image of the senate.

He also said that he struggled for about 11 years before becoming a lawmaker and will not allow another anyone tarnish the image.

“I am a person who struggled very hard to be here. I think the leader has to do something about this.  “We cannot allow one person to continue to tell lies. Not only Marafa but anybody misleading the public,”he said.

Matthew Uroghide representing Edo south senatorial district also expressed his views on the issue saying that Marafa’s actions were unacceptable and should not be treated with triviality.

He said this with respect to the publication in a punch newspaper over an interview granted by Marafa, stating that the publication smeared the integrity of the senate.

He added that he got calls from a large number of people from his constituency to that effect which made him feel diminished. “It took 11 years for Senator Misau to get to the senate, it took me 23 years. For one senator to think and act in a manner that will reduce my person is totally unacceptable.

“If anyone has read that interview, you will know it is an issue that we must look at very dispassionately. There were things that have no basis.

“If anyone is there to misguide the public, it should not be at the expense of this chamber,” he said. The matter was referred to committee on ethics and privileges to report back in one week.

Meanwhile, the Senate went into a closed door session to discuss issues relating to the appropriation bill and other national matters.

However, five bills were presented on the floor of the Senate. They include Public officers protection Act, FCT civil service commission bill, National Assembly budget and research office bill.

Others include Money laundering act 2011 and Mutual assistance in criminal matters bill 2016.
