The Lassa virus causing fever can be transmitted through contact with an infected rodent or contact with the bodily secretions of an infected person.

According to the Wellbeing Foundation Africa (WBFA) headed by Toyin Saraki, the wife of the Senate President, this also includes mother-to-child transmission and consumption of infected food items.

Panic and fear of the unknown has also gripped medical practitioners who come in contact with the disease everyday as it was reported that a doctor at the Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital, old GRA, Port Harcourt lost his life to the disease.

However, the Lagos state government also urged its residents to remain calm as everything will be done to curtail the spread of the virus in the state.

Although Nigerians have been warned to stay away from rats which are the primary cause of lassa fever, the Medical and Health Workers Union have have also warned that people stay clear of garri.
