– Senator Dino Melaye is a controversial figure in the Nigerian Senate

 – His penchant for making certain comments have earned him scornful remarks from many Nigerians

 – The senator threw caution to the wind again today, May 25, while speaking in the red chamber

The senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate, Dino Melaye is in the news wave again – and this time for the wrong reason, yet again.

Melaye who has a penchant for making demeaning comments when referring to others, threw the caution to the wind when he said that ”some governors have shown “Satanic Manifestations” in their states.”

The controversial figure was contributing to the debate in the floor of the Senate on local government administration in Nigerian states.

The comments of Melaye irritated the Senate minority leader, Godswill Akpabio who immediately raised a point of order asking Melaye to disclaim his statement.

Akpabio who came under Order 43 of the Senate rules stated that Senator Melaye has never been a governor and doesn’t know what it entails to govern a state.

The order was upheld by the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who was presiding over the session at the time due to the absence of Senate president, Bukola Saraki who had left for his trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

Melaye however continued his comments and concludes by saying he prays for the repentance of past, present and future state governors.

Contributing to the debate, Senator Sabi Abdullahi representing Niger North Senatorial District, said the local government administration in Nigeria is a shame as most local government secretariats have been taken over by weeds.

On his part, Senator James Manager representing Delta South Senatorial District, said local government administration is a Nigerian problem and the only way out is a constitution amendment.

Meanwhile, the Senate mandated its committee on states and local government to conduct a public hearing on the reforms aimed at strengthening local government administration in Nigeria within the context of the 1999 Constitution of the Fedetral Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and other extant laws; and make recommendations.

Two months ago, while speaking on a motion titled “The need for patronisation on made in Nigeria goods in Nigeria“,  Senator Melaye suggested that Governor Adams Oshiomole should not have married a woman who is not from Nigeria.

The remarks by the Melaye caused uproar in the polity, as many described him as very disrespectful to the women folk.

Not taking it likely, Governor Oshiomole fired back immediately, saying Melaye displayed his ’emptiness’ with the comment.
